Immigration & Asylum

In recent years, digital transformation in the field of migration has made significant progress, with key projects such as the digitization of 1.3 million files, the creation of Biometric Data Centers in Attica and Thessaloniki, and the development of integrated systems for security and management of accommodation facilities, such as "Kentaurus" (security control with cameras, algorithms, and drones) and "Yperion" (entry-exit and benefits management using personal and biometric data). At the same time, "Yperion" incorporates the National Registry for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors, while the unified information system for Reception and Asylum "ALKIONI-2" will be fully operational by 2024.

Challenges

There is a growing need to modernize the sector, with the aim of improving border security and control, rational management of migration flows, and the smooth integration of immigrants into society

Digital transformation must address challenges such as uncertain changes in flows, privacy protection, the integration of new technologies, and interoperability with other countries' systems

Digitizing the renewal of Single Type Residence Permits (ADET) will simplify, speed up, and make the process more transparent, increasing the efficiency of asylum services

The electronic procedure for transferring workers from third countries boosts legal migration and the economy by filling labor shortages

The use of artificial intelligence (e.g., information systems, automatic translation, subtitling) will support applicants for international protection and improve interpretation services

Goal 1

Strengthening legal migration channels, speeding up procedures, digitization, and preventing irregular migration

  • Digitization and simplification of legal immigration procedures (residence permits, services)

  • Strengthening migration policy at national and European level

  • Institutional and digital interventions for border security and prevention of irregular migration

Goal 2

Completion of the modernization of accommodation facilities and creation of specialized facilities

  • Improvement of reception, identification, and operation of asylum seeker accommodation facilities

  • Ensuring healthcare and relieving pressure on the national reception system
