Artificial Intelligence

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) led to the creation of the AI Advisory Committee, with the aim of preparing the country for the changes brought about by the technology. The Commission promotes participatory resilience, competitiveness and sustainable development, while identifying areas in which Greece has a comparative advantage, in order to play an active role in the international debate on AI. Its responsibilities include promoting innovation while respecting ethical and regulatory rules, supporting national positions in the European context and continuously monitoring developments in the field of AI. Greece is leading the way with the establishment of the first Centre of Excellence in AI, focusing on intelligent document analysis. This centre brings together experts from academia and business, enhancing the use of emerging technologies. At the same time, the Centre for AI, Data Science and Algorithms Research "ARCHIMIDES" was created, with the long-term goal of accelerating innovation. Finally, the Greek public sector is also taking steps in the field of AI with the new version of gov.gr, which includes the digital assistant myAIgov, offering support to citizens through intelligent interaction.

Challenges

The need to comply with the AI EU Act, which seeks to protect human rights, transparency and innovation.

The oversight of AI by the European AI Office, which requires cooperation and consistency between Member States.

The challenge of adapting to national regulations through Law 4961/2022, which covers the safe use of AI, the use of new technologies and cybersecurity.

The adoption gap between the public (93.33%) and private sector (50%) according to the Generative AI 2030 survey, with the private sector lagging significantly behind.

The shortage of specialist skills, with only 22% of specialists showing an increased rate of knowledge acquisition in AI.

The need for more targeted legal regulation and institutional interventions (18%) in areas such as privacy, security and personal data.

The lack of public and organisational trust in AI, with only 12% seeing progress in resolving these issues.

The challenge of implementing digital governance in the context of the digital transformation of the state.
